Jean Sibelius, composer

On a recent trip to Helsinki, Finland I was lucky enough to visit the monument to Jean Sibelius, composer in the late romantic period. He was born in 1865 and died in 1957. He had a real influence in shaping Finland’s identity. One of his most famous compositions is Finlandia.

Whilst his early symphonic compositions became well known he failed to produce very much in the last 30 years of his life. he did, however, compose smaller pieces and re edit some of his early work. He continued to take an interest in new developments in music although he didn’t always view them favorably!

The 8th of December, Sibelius’ birthday is now known as, ‘The Day of Finnish Music’.

I found the monument fascinating and a lasting tribute to his great talent.

Artistry in Norway

Recently we hopped off our cruise ship in Kristiansand, Norway, for a wander around the town. We should have docked elsewhere in Norway so that we could have an excursion to Oslo which we were really looking forward to but the gale force winds prohibited the ship arriving there.  However, if we had we wouldn’t have seen these lovely sand sculptures and wall art. Such talented and imaginative people!

Baby Seals on a Norfolk Beach

Dina’s blog has reminded me of happy holidays in Norfolk. Last November in bitterly cold weather we were lucky to see over 300 white baby seals with their mothers on the beach. We couldn’t get very close to them as the wardens were protecting them. So my photos aren’t as spectacular as Dina’s. I’ve included a few photos of other places in and around Norfolk. The renovated thatched roof at Wroxham is well worth a visit.
